How do fuel charges work?

Everything you need to know about our dynamic fuel charge.

On your Mothership Dashboard, you may have noticed a pricing update for both single and multiple shipments. Let's break down what that means exactly.

We are introducing a dynamic, regionally-based fuel charge to better reflect real-time local market rates across the country. Additionally, to maintain transparency with our pricing, you'll now be able to see fuel charges as their own line item. Fuel charges will gradually become available in the “Transaction breakdown” at quoting.

Please note: This charge view will only be available in quoting and won’t be defined separately from your shipping total in any confirmation emails, invoices, or statements.

What is a fuel charge?

A fuel charge is a fee associated with the cost of fuel per mile. These charges ensure that carriers earn a wage adjusted to current market conditions so we can continue delivering your local freight faster through a reliable carrier network. Mothership will actively monitor fuel price movements and continuously adjust our fuel charges as gas prices fluctuate.

Fuel charges will vary based on several contributing factors:

  • The shipment's distance

  • Weekly average fuel prices

  • Geographic location

How does pricing work?

Mothership dynamically calculates fuel charges based on weekly fuel pricing data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. To better understand the weekly average fuel price in your region, follow the EIA's Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update.
